Hurricane garage doors in Naples are not an upgrade — they are the single cheapest way to keep the roof on your house. If you own a home in Collier County and your garage door was installed before the current Florida Building Code cycle, or it has no Florida Product Approval label on the jamb, you are one storm away from a claim that runs into six figures. That is not a sales line. It is the way wind actually destroys Florida houses, and we have pulled the wreckage out of enough Naples garages to describe it in detail.

Speedy Garage Doors Naples installs, permits and inspects impact-rated hurricane garage doors across Naples, Golden Gate, Golden Gate Estates, Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Immokalee, Ave Maria and every community in between. We are locally owned, open 24 hours, hold Florida licence LCC20260000672, have been working Collier County doors with 20+ years in the trade, and we carry a 4.9-star rating from 336 Google reviews. This page is the long version of the conversation we have on almost every estimate — what the code actually requires, what an impact rating really means, what it costs, and what you can do if a new door is not in the budget this season.

Why the garage door is the weakest point in a Naples house during a hurricane

Look at your house from the street. Every other opening is small and framed on all four sides by structure — a window is maybe 15 square feet, a front door 20. Your two-car garage door is a 112-square-foot hole in a load-bearing wall, covered by a thin, hinged, sectional panel that has to be light enough for a 1/2-horsepower motor to lift. It is, by a wide margin, the largest unsupported opening in the building envelope, and it is the one most owners never think about.

Wind does not simply push on that door. In a hurricane, the pressure differential across it swings violently: positive pressure on the windward face as the gust front hits, then negative pressure — suction — as the eye wall passes and the wind reverses. A garage door that survives the push can be pulled off its tracks by the suction twenty minutes later. That is why hurricane garage doors are tested in cycles, not with a single load, and why “it feels solid” tells you nothing.

The pressure math homeowners never hear

At a 150 mph design wind speed, the design pressure acting on a residential garage door in Naples typically lands somewhere between roughly ±30 and ±55 pounds per square foot, depending on the building’s exposure category, its height, the door’s size and where the door sits relative to the corner of the house. Take the conservative end of that range on a standard 16 ft × 7 ft door:

  • 16 × 7 = 112 square feet of door.
  • 112 sq ft × 40 psf = 4,480 pounds of force.
  • That is roughly the weight of a loaded pickup truck, applied and released, over and over, for hours.

A non-rated builder-grade door with two horizontal struts and four track brackets per side was never designed to hold that. It fails at the middle sections first — the panel bows inward until the ends of the stiles pull out of the track rollers — and then the whole assembly folds into the garage.

What happens the second a hurricane garage door fails

This is the part that turns a $2,000 problem into a $200,000 one. The moment the garage door blows in, the garage becomes a pressurised box. The wind that was flowing around your house is now flowing into it, and the only way out is up. Internal pressure pushes on the underside of the roof deck at the same moment external suction is pulling on the top of it. The two loads add. Trusses lift off the top plate, the roof deck peels, and once the roof is compromised the interior walls lose their bracing.

Post-storm engineering surveys in Southwest Florida have said the same thing after every major event since Andrew: a very large share of catastrophic residential losses begin at the garage door. It is the reason the Florida Building Code treats garage doors as a structural component of the envelope rather than as a piece of trim, and the reason wind mitigation inspectors ask about them specifically.

What Hurricane Ian taught Collier County about garage doors

Ian made landfall on 28 September 2022 and gave Naples a storm surge event more than a wind event south of the eye — but the wind was still enough to take doors. In the weeks after, our phone did not stop. The pattern was consistent and worth learning from:

  • Doors did not usually break in the middle of a panel. They failed at the connections — track brackets tearing out of the jamb, lag screws pulling out of soft or termite-damaged wood bucks, end hinges shearing.
  • Rated doors installed badly failed anyway. More than once we found a genuinely impact-rated door held on by the fastener pattern the installer felt like using rather than the one the approval document specifies.
  • Water did as much damage as wind. Surge and driven rain killed opener logic boards by the dozen, and salt got into springs, rollers and track that then rusted through over the following year.
  • Bracing kits helped, but only where they were installed correctly and early. The ones bought at 6pm the night before and lag-bolted into drywall did nothing.

If you want the repair side of this, we cover it in depth on our hurricane damage garage door repair page. This page is about not needing it.

Wind Load Requirements for Hurricane Garage Doors in Collier County

What the Florida Building Code actually asks of a garage door in Naples — in plain English

Almost every argument about hurricane garage doors comes down to people using the words “hurricane rated” to mean four different things. Here is the actual framework, in the order an inspector applies it.

If you want the engineering detail rather than the summary — how ASCE 7 turns a wind speed into pounds per square foot, what the corner zone does to your number, and exactly what an inspector checks — we wrote a full technical page on wind load requirements in Collier County.

Naples sits in a 150–172 mph ultimate design wind speed zone

Collier County is not one flat number. The ultimate design wind speed (Vult) used for residential design in our area generally runs from about 150 mph inland to roughly 172 mph along the coastal strip, and the county publishes wind speed maps that a designer or permit reviewer reads by address. Marco Island and the beachfront in Old Naples carry a higher number than a house off Immokalee Road twelve miles inland. This is why a door that is legal in Golden Gate Estates may not be legal in Port Royal, and why we never quote a hurricane garage door without the property address.

Exposure category B, C and D — why waterfront costs more

On top of wind speed, the code assigns your house an exposure category based on what is upwind of it:

  • Exposure B — suburban, wooded, built-up. Most interior Naples subdivisions with mature trees and neighbouring two-storey houses. Lowest pressures.
  • Exposure C — open terrain, scattered obstructions. Much of Golden Gate Estates, Ave Maria, the ag fringe around Immokalee, and newer subdivisions where the landscaping has not grown in.
  • Exposure D — flat, unobstructed, facing open water. Gulf-front and bay-front properties on Marco Island, Vanderbilt Beach, Isles of Capri.

The same 16 ft × 7 ft door on the same street can require a materially higher design pressure in Exposure D than in Exposure B. That is the honest answer to “why is my neighbour’s door cheaper than mine.”

HVHZ vs. Collier County — the difference that costs people money

The High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) is Miami-Dade and Broward counties only. Collier County is not in the HVHZ. That has two practical consequences homeowners get wrong in both directions:

  • You do not automatically need a Miami-Dade NOA (Notice of Acceptance) product in Naples. A statewide Florida Product Approval (an “FL number”) for the correct design pressure is what Collier County permitting wants to see.
  • But a Miami-Dade NOA product is never wrong here — it is tested to a stricter protocol, and if you are on the water it is often the easiest way to hit the pressure you need. Some insurers also like seeing it.

Where people lose money is buying “hurricane rated” from a big-box catalogue with no FL number that covers their specific size and pressure, then failing inspection and paying twice.

Florida Product Approval (FL#) — the only document that matters

Every hurricane garage door we install in Naples carries a Florida Product Approval number. That document is not a marketing badge; it is an engineering file that states, for each door model and each size:

  1. The maximum width and height the approval covers.
  2. The positive and negative design pressures the assembly is approved for.
  3. Whether it is impact-rated or requires shutters/opening protection.
  4. The exact installation detail — track bracket spacing, fastener type, embedment depth, jamb material, number of struts. This is the part almost nobody reads and the part that decides whether your door survives.

When we hand over a job we hand over the FL number and the installation sheet with it. Keep it. Your wind mitigation inspector and your insurance company will both eventually ask.

Number of struts, brackets and anchors

The visible difference between a hurricane garage door and a standard one is mostly hardware. On a rated 16-foot door in our market you should expect heavier-gauge steel skins, a full-length strut on every section (not just the top), reinforced end stiles, 14-gauge or heavier track, more track brackets per side, and a specified anchor into a solid jamb — often a 3/8-inch lag into a properly attached 2× buck or a concrete anchor into the block. A builder-grade door might have two struts and four brackets. A rated door might have six struts and eight to twelve brackets. That hardware is the rating.

Impact-Rated vs. Wind-Load-Only Hurricane Garage Doors

Two different tests, two different price tags, and one decision you should not guess at

“Hurricane garage door” covers two genuinely different products. Confusing them is the most expensive mistake in this whole category.

Wind-load rated (pressure only)

A wind-load-rated door is engineered and tested to hold a stated positive and negative design pressure without failing. It resists the push and the suction. What it does not promise is that it will survive being hit by something. If a wind-load-only door is breached by debris, the hole lets the pressure in and you are back to the roof-lift problem.

Impact rated (pressure + large missile impact)

An impact-rated door has to pass everything above and the large missile impact test: a nominal 9-pound 2×4 fired at the door at roughly 34 mph (about 50 feet per second), striking specified points on the panel and on the glazing. After it takes the hit, the same specimen goes into a cyclic pressure rig and is loaded thousands of times with positive and negative pressure to simulate the hours of a passing storm. It has to hold. No tearing open, no separation, no penetration.

That second half is the point people miss. It is not “does it dent.” It is “after it is damaged, does it still function as a sealed part of the building envelope for the rest of the storm.”

When can you legally use a non-impact door?

Under Florida’s rules a garage door opening generally has to be protected either by an impact-rated assembly or by an approved shutter/opening protection system over a wind-load-rated door. Both paths can be code-compliant. The practical comparison for a Naples homeowner:

  • Impact-rated door: higher up-front cost, zero effort forever. Nothing to deploy, nothing to store, nothing to do at 2am when the cone shifts. This is what we recommend for almost everyone, and it is what nearly every buyer chooses once they have deployed shutters exactly one time.
  • Wind-load door + shutters: lower door cost, but you are buying, storing, maintaining and physically installing a panel system in the hours before a storm, on the largest opening in the house. Snowbirds who are not in Florida in September should think very hard about this one.

Glass, windows and hurricane garage doors

Windows in the top section are the single most popular option we sell and the easiest place to break the rating. If you want glass in a hurricane garage door in Naples, the glazing itself has to be part of the impact-rated assembly — laminated impact glass in the approved frame, covered by the same FL number as the door. A rated door with a non-rated decorative window kit dropped into it is not a rated door. We will not do it, and it will not pass.

Insulation is not a hurricane garage door rating

An R-value tells you about your power bill, not about wind. Polystyrene or polyurethane fill does add stiffness and it does make a door quieter and cooler — and in a Naples garage that regularly runs 105°F, a well-insulated door is worth having on its own merits. But do not let anyone sell you insulation as a substitute for a pressure rating. We cover the energy side separately on our new garage doors page.

Not sure what your current door is rated for? We will tell you for free.

Send us a photo of the label on your door jamb — or call and we will come look. No charge, no pitch.

How to Tell If Your Current Garage Door Is Hurricane Rated

Five checks you can do yourself in about ten minutes

Before you spend a dollar, find out what you already have. Most Naples homeowners genuinely do not know, and about half the time the answer is better than they feared.

1. Find the hurricane garage door label

Open the garage door most of the way and look at the inside face of the end stile (the vertical metal edge of a section, at the left or right end) and at the jamb next to the track. A rated door carries a permanent label with the manufacturer, model, the design pressures, and either an FL number or a Miami-Dade NOA number. Photograph it. If there is no label anywhere, treat the door as unrated — an inspector will.

2. Count the struts

Struts are the horizontal reinforcing bars across the inside of each section. Look up at the door from inside the garage. A standard non-rated 16-foot door often has one strut on the top section and nothing else. A hurricane-rated 16-foot door in our wind zone typically has a strut on every section, and they are noticeably heavier.

3. Count the track brackets

Follow the vertical track from the floor up. Count how many brackets attach it to the jamb on one side. Four is builder-grade. Rated doors in Collier County commonly run eight or more per side, spaced per the approval document, with heavier fasteners.

4. Look at what the brackets are screwed into

This is the one that fails houses. Push on the jamb where a bracket lands. If the wood is soft, spongy, split around the lag, or if the lags are short drywall-type screws into a thin trim board, the door’s rating is meaningless — the connection will let go long before the panel does. In older Naples and Golden Gate houses we regularly find wood bucks that termites or moisture got to years ago.

5. Check the door’s age against your permit history

If the door is original to a house built before the 2000s and there is no replacement permit on file with Collier County, it is almost certainly not rated to today’s pressures. Permit records are public and searchable — worth ten minutes.

The most common hurricane garage door failure: a rated door installed wrong

We want to be blunt about this because it is the thing we see most after storms. A hurricane garage door is a system: panel, stiles, hinges, rollers, track, brackets, fasteners and the structure they anchor into. The Florida Product Approval covers that whole system installed a specific way. Skip four brackets, use the wrong lag, anchor into a rotten buck, or reuse the old track “because it looked fine” and you have a door with a sticker on it and none of the performance. If you are getting quotes, ask every contractor which FL number they are installing and whether they will supply the installation sheet. The good ones will not hesitate.

Hurricane Garage Door Options We Install in Naples

Steel, insulated, glazed, carriage-style and commercial — all of it available impact-rated

You are not choosing between “safe and ugly” or “pretty and fragile.” Every style below exists in an impact-rated version, and the ratings have improved enormously in the last decade. We install LiftMaster openers and carry a seven-year warranty on new doors — two things our Google reviewers mention constantly.

Insulated steel impact-rated doors — the default choice

Two skins of heavy-gauge galvanised steel with polyurethane foam bonded between them, full-length struts, reinforced stiles. This is what goes on most Naples houses. It gets you the pressure rating, real thermal performance for a garage that shares a wall with your living space, and it is the quietest option because the foam kills panel drum. In a coastal environment the coating matters as much as the gauge — ask about the finish system, not just the thickness.

Impact-rated doors with windows

Top-section glazing with laminated impact glass, inside the approved frame, covered by the same FL number. Frosted, obscure, seeded and clear are all available. Expect to pay a meaningful premium over solid — impact glass is expensive and the frames are engineered. Worth it if the garage is a workshop or gym, which in Naples it very often is.

Carriage-house and modern flush styles

Overlay carriage doors and flat modern panels both come impact-rated now. If you are in a gated community with an architectural review board, bring us the ARB spec sheet before you fall in love with a style — we will find a rated door that matches it rather than the other way around.

One 16-foot door or two 8-foot doors?

Structurally, two single doors are easier to rate and cheaper to get to a high pressure, because each opening is smaller and each has its own jamb. If you are building or you already have a centre post, keep it. If you have a single 16- or 18-foot opening on the water in Exposure D, the door gets expensive fast — and that is physics, not a markup.

Commercial and rolling steel

For warehouses, contractor bays and packing houses from Naples to Immokalee we install wind-rated rolling steel and sectional commercial doors. Different approvals, different guide anchoring, usually a different inspection path. Details on our commercial garage doors page.

The opener is part of your hurricane garage door storm plan

A hurricane garage door with a dead opener is a wall you cannot get your car out from behind. Every install we do includes a manual release check, and we push hard for a battery backup opener in Collier County — it is required on new residential openers sold in Florida for exactly this reason, and it is the single most appreciated feature after a storm knocks power out for four days. More on our garage door openers page.

Hurricane Garage Door Reinforcement — Retrofitting the Door You Already Have

What bracing kits do, what they do not do, and when they are the right call

Sometimes a new door is not happening this month. That is a real situation and it deserves a real answer rather than a shrug.

Vertical bracing kits

A retrofit brace is a vertical post — usually two telescoping steel or aluminium channels — that you install on the inside face of the door, anchored into a bracket in the slab at the bottom and into structure above the opening at the top. It stiffens the door against the middle-panel bowing that starts most failures. On a two-car door you generally need two posts.

They work, within limits, if:

  • The floor bracket is anchored into the concrete slab with the specified anchor, not glued or screwed to the surface.
  • The top connection lands in real structure — the header or the block — not in drywall, not in a trim board.
  • They are installed and test-fitted before the storm, not at dusk the night before while the wind is already up.
  • The door’s own track, brackets and jamb are sound. A brace bolted to a door whose track is tearing out of a rotten buck just changes where the failure starts.

What hurricane garage door bracing is not

Retrofit bracing is a mitigation measure, not a code-compliant substitute for a rated door. It generally will not get you a permit sign-off, and it usually will not earn you the insurance wind mitigation credit that an approved rated door earns. Treat it as harm reduction for one more season while you plan the replacement.

Hurricane garage door track, jamb and hardware reinforcement

Often the highest-value money you can spend on an older door is not on the panel at all. Replacing soft wood bucks with sound pressure-treated material, adding track brackets with correct fasteners, upgrading to 14-gauge track, adding struts, and replacing tired rollers and end hinges will take a marginal door and make it materially harder to peel off. We will quote this honestly against the cost of a new rated door so you can see whether it makes sense — sometimes it does not, and we will say so.

Springs and cables are part of hurricane garage door readiness too

A door you cannot open or close is a liability when you need to move a vehicle before a storm. If your springs are at the end of their cycle life, deal with it in May, not in the cone. See garage door spring repair.

Honest ranges, what moves the price, and the money you get back

We publish ranges because refusing to is a tactic, not a policy. What actually moves a hurricane garage door price in Naples

  1. Design pressure required at your address. Exposure D on the water can double the door cost versus Exposure B inland for the same size.
  2. Opening size. Pressure acts on area. An 18-foot opening is not 12% harder than a 16-foot one.
  3. Glass. Impact glazing is genuinely expensive and there is no cheap honest version.
  4. Condition of the structure. If the buck is rotten, it gets rebuilt. Non-negotiable — the anchors are the rating.
  5. Finish system. Coastal salt exposure justifies the better coating package.

Insurance wind mitigation credits

Florida insurers give premium credits for verified opening protection, and the garage door is one of the openings on the wind mitigation inspection form. Getting your garage door to rated, permitted, inspected status can move your windstorm premium — sometimes enough that the door pays for a meaningful share of itself over the years you own the house. We are not licensed to quote you a number; what we can do is hand you the FL number, the permit and the final inspection so your wind mitigation inspector has everything they need. Call your agent before you buy and ask specifically what documentation they want.

Financing and timing

Doors are ordered, not stocked, in the sizes and pressures Naples needs — figure on a lead time, and understand that lead time gets much worse once a storm is named. The cheapest hurricane garage door you will ever buy is the one you order in February. For a broader cost breakdown across all our services see garage door repair cost in Naples.

Permits and Inspection in Collier County and the City of Naples

Why the permit is the whole point, not paperwork

Replacing a garage door in Collier County requires a permit. Some homeowners ask us to skip it. We do not, and here is the argument rather than the rule.

What you lose without a hurricane garage door permit

  • The insurance credit. No permit and no final inspection generally means no verified opening protection on your wind mitigation form. You paid for the rated door and got none of the premium benefit.
  • The claim. After a loss, an adjuster looking at an unpermitted structural component of the envelope is not a conversation you want to have.
  • The sale. Unpermitted work shows up at closing, and it shows up at the worst possible moment.
  • The verification. The inspection is the only independent check that the installer used the fastener pattern the approval requires. That check is worth having.

What the inspector looks at

Expect them to verify the product approval matches the door installed, that the size is within the approval, that the design pressure suits the address, that track bracket spacing and fastener type and embedment match the installation detail, and that the anchoring substrate is sound. This is a short list and a rated door installed properly passes it without drama.

HOA and architectural review

Most Naples gated communities have an ARB that controls colour, panel style, window layout and hardware. Get their approval in writing before the door is ordered — custom doors are not returnable. We are happy to supply spec sheets and images for your submission.

Your Naples Hurricane Garage Door Timeline

What to do twelve months out, thirty days out, seventy-two hours out, and after

Twelve months out — the off-season (December to April)

  • Find your door’s label and photograph it. Know your rating or know you have none.
  • Get a written quote for a rated replacement even if you are not buying yet. Prices and lead times are best now.
  • Have the springs, cables, rollers and opener serviced. See garage door maintenance.
  • Check the jamb for rot and termite damage. Fix it now, cheaply, while nothing depends on it.
  • Ask your insurance agent what documentation earns the wind mitigation credit.

Thirty days out — early season (May to June)

  • If you are replacing this year, order now. Lead times stretch and installers book solid the moment a system forms.
  • Install and test-fit any bracing kit. Mark the parts, store them where you can reach them in the dark.
  • Confirm the opener’s battery backup works — actually kill the breaker and cycle the door.
  • Clear the garage floor track area so the door can seat fully.

Seventy-two hours out — a storm is in the cone

  • Deploy bracing or shutters now, in daylight, not the night before.
  • Close the door fully and leave it closed. A partly open door is the worst possible configuration — it catches wind underneath and lifts.
  • Do not “crack the door to equalise pressure.” That advice is wrong and it has cost people their roofs.
  • Pull the manual release only if you need the car out and power is already gone; re-secure the door afterwards.
  • Move anything corrosive, and anything that can become a missile, off the garage floor.
  • Photograph the door, the track and the opener. Time-stamped pre-storm photos make claims go smoothly.

After the storm

  • Do not force a damaged door open with the opener. A bent track will destroy the panels, the rollers and often the motor.
  • Do not touch a spring, cable or a door hanging out of its track. Torsion springs hold lethal energy; a storm-damaged assembly can release it without warning.
  • Photograph everything before you clear anything.
  • Rinse salt off the track, springs and hardware with fresh water if surge or spray reached the garage — salt keeps working for months.
  • Call us. We run 24/7 emergency garage door service and we can at minimum secure the opening the same day.

Post-Hurricane Garage Door Damage — What We See After Every Storm

And what is repairable versus what has to be replaced

Bowed and buckled hurricane garage door sections

The classic. One or two middle sections are dished inward, the door will not track smoothly, and the end stiles are pulled. Sometimes a single section can be replaced if the model is still in production and the rest of the door is sound. Honest answer: on a non-rated door it is usually better money to replace the whole door with a rated one, because you are otherwise paying to restore something that already proved it cannot hold.

Bent track and jumped rollers

Very common and very repairable. Bent vertical track, a roller out of the track, a sheared end hinge. Do not run the opener — call. Full detail on our garage door track repair page.

Torn-out brackets and failed jambs

The lag pulled the wood, or the wood itself is gone. This is a structural repair, not a hardware swap, and it is the one that tells you whether the door was ever really anchored.

Water, salt and opener electronics

Surge and driven rain kill logic boards. Symptoms show up days later: intermittent operation, sensors that will not align, a motor that hums and stops. Salt on springs and cables accelerates fatigue, and a spring that survived the storm can snap two months afterwards. If water reached your garage, get the whole system looked at even if the door still opens.

Insurance claims — what to capture before you touch anything

  1. Wide shot of the whole opening from outside and inside.
  2. Close-ups of every torn bracket, bent track section and damaged panel.
  3. The product label, if it survived.
  4. Any debris that struck the door, in place.
  5. The water line, if there was surge.

We provide written, photo-supported estimates that adjusters accept, and we have done a great many of them in Collier County.

Where We Install Hurricane Garage Doors

Every community in Collier County — and the wind zone changes as you move

We cover the whole county, and the design pressure your door needs genuinely changes across it. A few notes by area:

Coastal Naples, Marco Island, Vanderbilt Beach and Isles of Capri

Highest wind speeds, Exposure C and D, salt everywhere. Expect the highest design pressures in the county and plan on a premium coating package. Corrosion is not a footnote here — it is the reason doors get replaced early. See Marco Island garage door service.

Golden Gate and Golden Gate Estates

Open terrain, mostly Exposure C, a lot of houses from the 1980s and 1990s with original doors and wood bucks that have quietly failed. This is where we find the most unrated doors and the most rot. See Golden Gate Estates garage door repair.

North Naples, Pelican Bay, Pine Ridge and the Vineyards

Mature landscaping puts much of this area in Exposure B, and there is a very high concentration of HOAs with architectural review. Style approval usually takes longer than the door.

Immokalee, Ave Maria and the eastern county

Inland wind speeds, dust and agricultural grit rather than salt, and a lot of commercial and packing-house doors alongside residential. We serve it fully, in English and Spanish — see servicio en Immokalee.

Bonita Springs and the Lee County line

Different permitting jurisdiction, similar exposure to coastal Collier. We handle the paperwork either way.

Hurricane Rated Garage Doors by Naples Neighborhood and Collier County Community

Design pressure is not the same across Collier County. Coastal Naples, Marco Island and Vanderbilt Beach sit in a far harsher exposure category than Golden Gate Estates or Ave Maria, and the rating your door has to carry changes with it. Hurricane Rated Garage Doors in Naples — Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a hurricane garage door in Naples?

If your house is in Collier County and your garage door was replaced under a current permit, you may already have one. If the door is original to a pre-2000s house, or has no product label on the jamb or end stile, it is almost certainly not rated for today’s design pressures. Given that the garage door is the largest opening in your building envelope and that its failure is a leading cause of catastrophic roof loss, it is the highest-value single upgrade most Naples homeowners can make.

What wind speed do hurricane garage doors in Naples have to handle?

Collier County residential design generally works from an ultimate design wind speed in the range of roughly 150 mph inland to about 172 mph on the coastal strip, read by address from the county wind maps. Your door is then specified by design pressure (psf), which depends on that wind speed plus your exposure category, the door size and its position on the wall — not by a single headline mph number.

What is the difference between impact-rated and wind-load rated?

A wind-load rated door is tested to hold specified positive and negative pressures. An impact-rated door must do that and also survive the large missile impact test — a nominal 9 lb 2×4 fired at roughly 34 mph — and then pass thousands of cycles of pressure loading afterwards without opening up. Impact-rated needs no shutters; wind-load-only requires approved opening protection over it.

Does Naples require Miami-Dade NOA products?

No. The High Velocity Hurricane Zone is Miami-Dade and Broward only. In Collier County a statewide Florida Product Approval (FL number) covering your size and required design pressure is what permitting wants. A Miami-Dade NOA product is still perfectly acceptable here and is often the easiest way to hit high coastal pressures.

How much does a hurricane garage door cost in Naples?

Most impact-rated insulated steel double doors (16×7) run roughly $2,600–$4,800 installed. Single doors typically run $1,600–$2,900. Impact glass, oversized openings, carriage styles and high coastal exposure push the number well above that, sometimes past $10,000. Jamb rebuilds, which are common on older houses, add $250–$900. Always get a written quote against your address.

Will a hurricane garage door lower my insurance?

It can. Florida insurers give wind mitigation credits for verified opening protection, and the garage door appears on the wind mitigation inspection form. To claim it you need the product approval documentation, the permit and the passed final inspection — which is exactly why we will not install without pulling a permit. Ask your agent what they require before you buy.

Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Collier County?

Yes. A garage door is a structural component of the building envelope and its replacement is permitted work. Skipping the permit costs you the insurance credit, complicates any future claim, shows up at resale, and removes the only independent verification that the door was anchored the way its approval requires.

Can I brace my existing door instead of buying a hurricane garage door?

You can, and a correctly installed vertical bracing kit does reduce the mid-panel bowing that starts most failures — provided the floor bracket is anchored into the slab, the top connection reaches real structure, and the door’s own track and jamb are sound. But bracing is mitigation, not code compliance. It generally will not satisfy a permit or earn the insurance credit. Treat it as a bridge to replacement.

Should I open the garage door slightly to equalise pressure during a hurricane?

No. This is a persistent myth and it is dangerous. A partly open door catches wind underneath, lifts, and fails far more readily than a closed one. Close the door completely and leave it closed.

Can I put windows in an impact-rated garage door?

Yes, but the glazing must be part of the rated assembly — laminated impact glass in the approved frame, covered by the same FL number as the door. Dropping a decorative non-rated window kit into a rated door voids the rating and will not pass inspection. Expect impact glass to be the single largest option cost.

How long does installation take, and how far ahead should I order?

A straightforward residential replacement is usually a single day on site. The real constraint is lead time: doors are built to your size and pressure, not stocked. Order in the winter or spring. Once a storm is named, both manufacturing and installer availability collapse and prices move.

My door was damaged in a storm — repair or replace?

If the door is already rated and the damage is track, brackets, rollers or a single section on a current model, repair is often sensible. If the door is unrated and it bowed or came off its track, you are paying to restore something that has already demonstrated it cannot hold Collier County pressures — put the money into a rated replacement instead. We will give you both numbers in writing.

Do you offer 24-hour service after a hurricane?

Yes. We are open 24 hours and we run emergency calls throughout Collier County. After a storm our first priority is securing openings so the house is closed up, then scheduling the permanent repair or replacement.
