Garage Door Will Not Open: Eight Causes, Ranked by How Likely They Are

A broken torsion spring shows a visible gap in the coil. This is the most consequential item on the list.

A door that will not open is not the same problem as a door that will not close. A door that refuses to close is usually a safety system doing its job. A door that refuses to open is usually something that has actually failed.

Work through these eight in order. They are ranked by how often we find each one, and the order also happens to run from free to expensive.

1. The remote battery, or the remote itself

Obvious, and still the most common cause. Test with the wall console: if the console opens the door and no remote does, you have a radio problem rather than a door problem. Fresh battery first. If that fails, and the console works, the opener may have lost its memory — re-enroll the remote by pressing the learn button on the motor head and then the remote button within about thirty seconds.

One trap: holding the learn button down erases every code in memory rather than adding one. Press and release.

2. Power

Check that the opener is plugged in — genuinely check, because it gets knocked out more often than people expect. Then check the breaker, and then check the GFCI outlet, which in many garages serves the opener and which trips silently. A GFCI that has tripped shows no obvious sign except that everything on it is dead.

If the opener has power, its indicator light will usually be on or will flash when you press the button.

3. The wall console or its wiring

If remotes work and the wall button does not, it is the console or the low-voltage wire running to it. Both are inexpensive. Corroded terminals in a humid garage are the usual cause here.

4. The manual release has been pulled

If the motor runs and the trolley moves along the rail but the door does not move at all, the door is disconnected from the opener. Someone pulled the release cord — during a power cut, or a child playing with it. Reconnect by pulling the cord toward the door (or per your model instructions) and running the opener until the trolley re-engages with a click.

5. The lock is engaged

Many doors have a manual slide lock or a T-handle lock. If it has been thrown, the opener will strain, click, or reverse — and on some units it will trip an internal fault. This catches people after a long absence, which in Naples means after a season away.

6. A broken spring

This is the most consequential item on the list. Symptoms: a single very loud bang some time earlier that you may have attributed to something else; the motor runs and strains but the door barely moves or lifts a few inches and stops; the door is extremely heavy if you try it by hand.

A door that stops short on the way up is almost always an up travel limit that has drifted rather than a failing opener. Here is how to set the travel limits on a Chamberlain opener before you spend money on parts.

Go and look above the door. A broken torsion spring shows a visible gap in the coil, typically a couple of inches wide. On extension springs, look along the horizontal tracks for a spring that is stretched out, in two pieces, or hanging.

Stop immediately. The springs lift the door, not the motor. With a spring gone the opener is dragging the full weight and destroying its own gear, the cables and often the top section. Unplug it. Full detail on our spring repair page.

7. A snapped or jumped cable

Symptoms: the door is visibly crooked, one side higher than the other; a cable is hanging loose or wrapped incorrectly on its drum; the door binds and will not travel. This frequently follows a spring failure, and it is also what happens when a door is run after the balance has gone.

Do not attempt to correct this. The cables are under spring tension and a door in this state can move suddenly. Our page on cable repair explains the failure pattern, which in coastal Naples usually starts as corrosion inside the strands where nobody can see it.

8. The opener itself

If everything mechanical checks out and the door moves easily by hand, the fault is in the unit. The usual candidates, in order of how often we see them:

  • Stripped drive gear — the motor runs but nothing moves, often with a grinding noise from the head unit. Common and inexpensive.
  • Failed capacitor — the motor hums but does not turn.
  • Limit switch fault — the door moves a short distance and stops or reverses.
  • Logic board — no response, or erratic behaviour. On an older unit the board can cost a large fraction of a new opener.
  • Burnt motor — usually the end of the road on a unit over ten years old.

Our opener page covers which of these are worth repairing and which mean replacement.

How to get the car out safely

This is the actual question behind most of these calls.

  1. Pull the manual release cord to disconnect the door from the opener.
  2. Try to lift the door by hand. If it lifts easily and stays where you put it, the springs are intact and you can drive out. Prop it or have someone hold it.
  3. If it is brutally heavy or will not move, stop. A spring has failed and you are attempting to hold hundreds of pounds of steel with nothing counterbalancing it. The release cord does not make a door with a broken spring lighter — this is the single most common way people are hurt by a garage door.

If step three is where you are, call us. Getting a car out from behind a failed door is a routine after-hours job rather than a crisis, and it is described on our emergency repair page.

The one rule underneath all eight

Stop pressing the button. Almost every expensive garage door repair we attend was a cheap repair that somebody cycled six more times. A broken spring costs $250 to $600. A broken spring plus bent track, torn hinges, a damaged top section and a burnt opener gear is four times that, and every bit of the difference happened after the first failure.

Unplug the opener, and the repair stays small.

Frequently asked questions

My garage door motor runs but the door does not move. What is wrong?

Two likely causes. Either the manual release cord has been pulled, so the door is disconnected from the trolley — you would see the trolley travelling along the rail with the door still. Or the drive gear inside the opener has stripped, which usually comes with a grinding noise from the head unit. Both are inexpensive.

How do I get my car out if the garage door will not open?

Pull the manual release cord and try lifting the door by hand. If it lifts easily and stays put, the springs are fine and you can drive out. If it is very heavy or will not move, a spring has failed — stop, because the release does not make a broken-spring door lighter, and that is how people get hurt.

The door lifts a few inches and stops. Why?

Usually a broken spring: the opener strains against the full weight, senses the load and gives up. Sometimes a limit switch fault or a lock that has been thrown. Look above the door for a visible gap in the torsion spring coil — that answers it in five seconds.

Nothing happens at all when I press the button. Where do I start?

Power. Check the plug is genuinely in, then the breaker, then the GFCI outlet — GFCIs serve many garage openers and they trip silently, showing no sign except that everything on the circuit is dead. If the opener has power its indicator will light or flash when you press.

Is it safe to keep trying the opener?

No, and this is the most expensive mistake in the whole category. Every extra cycle on a door with a failed spring or a jumped cable bends track, tears hinges, damages panels and burns opener gears. Unplug it and the repair stays small.
