That is genuinely good news: springs and cables affect lifting. Photo eyes, limits and force settings affect closing. If your door goes up perfectly every time and only misbehaves on the way down, you have narrowed it to a short list before anyone touches a tool.
This page walks that list in the order a technician would. We are Speedy Garage Doors Naples — locally owned, licensed LCC20260000672, open 24 hours across Collier County, 4.9 stars from 336 Google reviews. If you get to the bottom and it is still faulting, call us; a door that will not close leaves your house open and we treat it as urgent.
Step 1 — Look along the floor
Check the entire width of the opening at ground level, including both corners. A bin, a bike wheel, a coiled hose, a bag of mulch, a broom leaning against the wall. This is roughly one call in six and it costs nothing to rule out.
Step 2 — Clean both photo-eye lenses
The two small sensors sit no more than six inches above the floor on either side of the opening. Wipe both lenses with a clean, soft, dry cloth. In Florida the usual culprits are spider webs built overnight, lovebug residue in spring and autumn, dust, pollen and salt film. Do not spray cleaner directly onto them.
Step 3 — Read the LEDs
One sensor is a sender and shows a steady light whenever it has power. The other is a receiver and shows a steady light only when it can see the beam. Wave a broom handle through the beam — the receiver light should go out and come back.
- Receiver light dark or flickering: misalignment, obstruction, dirty lens or sun glare.
- Both lights dark: you have lost power to the sensor circuit — a damaged wire, a staple through the insulation, or a corroded terminal at the opener.
Step 4 — Realign the sensor whose light is out
Loosen the wing nut or screw on that bracket and move the sensor slowly until the LED goes solid and stops flickering, then tighten it. Both sensors should sit at the same height and point directly at each other. Sensor brackets live at bumper height, so a knock from a car, a wheelbarrow or a child is the most common cause of all.
Step 5 — Count the blinks
Most openers report a sensor fault by flashing the overhead light — commonly ten flashes on LiftMaster and Chamberlain units. If the light is blinking and the door will not close, the opener is explicitly telling you the safety circuit is broken.

When It Is Not the Photo Eyes
Four other reasons a garage door will not close
The close limit is set wrong
The opener stores where “closed” is. If it thinks the floor is lower than it actually is, the door hits the concrete, the motor senses resistance and reverses. The tell: the door reverses right at the floor rather than partway down, and the light usually does not blink a sensor code. Openers have a close-limit adjustment; on a modern unit it is a small dial or a programming sequence in the manual.
The force setting is too low — or the door has become stiff
Openers monitor how much effort the travel takes and abort if it exceeds a threshold. If your door has grown stiff — dry rollers, tired springs, a slightly bent track — the opener trips out. Turning the force up is not the fix; it is masking a door that has become hard to move, and it defeats a safety feature. Get the balance checked instead. See roller replacement and spring repair.
Sun glare — very Naples
Low afternoon sun shining straight into a west-facing opening can saturate the receiving eye so it cannot pick the beam out of the glare. The signature is a door that works all morning and fails at 5pm. Fixed with a sun shield, repositioning, or swapping which side the receiver sits on.
Water, corrosion and storm damage
Water in a splice, a corroded terminal or condensation inside a cracked sensor housing gives you the “works when dry, fails when wet” pattern. After flooding or a nearby lightning strike, the opener’s logic board itself may be the fault. Both are common in Collier County. See garage door sensor repair.
The lock is engaged
Worth checking: many doors have a manual slide lock or a “lock” button on the wall console that disables remote closing. On some openers the wall button lock has a small LED that blinks. It sounds trivial and it catches people out regularly.

The One Thing You Must Not Do
Never bypass the safety sensors
Twisting the sensor wires together, taping the two eyes face to face on one bracket, or jumping the terminals at the opener will make the door close. It will also remove the only system that stops a closing garage door on a child, a pet or a person.
External entrapment protection has been required on residential garage door openers in the United States since 1993, and it exists because closing doors killed and injured children before it. Photo-eye repair is one of the cheapest jobs on our price list — realignment typically $85–$150, a replacement sensor pair $120–$260. There is no version of this where bypassing is the rational choice.
If you need the door closed tonight and cannot get the sensors working, most openers allow a constant-pressure close from the wall button: hold the button down and the door closes under your direct supervision. Use that as a stopgap while you wait for us — not as a permanent arrangement, and not with children or pets in the house.
Test both safety systems once it is fixed
- Photo-eye reverse: start the door closing and break the beam with a broom handle. The door must stop and return fully open.
- Contact reverse: lay a solid object flat on the floor under the door — a roll of paper towel works — and close it. The door must reverse on contact.
If either test fails, the door is not safe. Call us.
“Five-star service from start to finish. I am extremely happy with the garage door installation; the technicians were efficient and knowledgeable. Most importantly, the pricing was very fair and transparent. I’ll definitely be using them again!”
“Shai was outstanding! He was timely, on top of communications, he went above and beyond on our garage issues, had the parts, and was fairly priced. I’m really glad we found him after bad experiences with other companies.”
“My garage stopped working and of course it had to happen on trash day. I really needed a fast and competent company… They were super professional, gave me an appointment right away on the same day.”
Garage Door Will Not Close — Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my garage door open but not close?
Because opening and closing use different systems. Springs and cables affect lifting; the photo-eye safety sensors, the close-limit setting and the force setting affect closing. A door that opens perfectly and refuses to close is almost always a sensor fault, an obstruction, a close-limit that is set too low, or a force setting tripping because the door has become stiff.
Why does my garage door close a few inches and reverse?
The opener lost the photo-eye beam mid-close. Check the full width of the floor for obstructions, clean both lenses, look at the sensor LEDs and realign the one that is dark, and inspect the wiring for staples, nicks and corroded terminals. If it reverses right at the floor instead of partway down, it is more likely the close limit or the force setting.
What does it mean when the garage door opener light blinks 10 times?
On most LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers, ten flashes of the overhead light is the safety-sensor fault code — the opener cannot see a clear beam. Work through obstruction, lens cleaning, LED check, realignment and wiring inspection. If the code persists with everything clean and aligned, the sensors or the logic board need service.
Can I bypass my garage door sensors to make it close?
No. Bypassing removes the only system that stops a closing door on a child, a pet or a person, and external entrapment protection has been required on US residential openers since 1993. As a stopgap you can usually hold the wall button down for a constant-pressure close under your direct supervision, but get the sensors repaired — realignment is typically $85–$150.
Why does my garage door only fail to close in the afternoon?
Sun glare. Low afternoon sun into a west-facing garage can saturate the receiving photo eye so it cannot distinguish the beam. It is a very common Naples fault. A sun shield, repositioned brackets, or swapping which side the receiver sits on all fix it.
My door will not close and it just rained — is that related?
Almost certainly. Water in a wire splice, a corroded low-voltage terminal or condensation inside a cracked sensor housing produces the classic “works when dry, fails when wet” fault. Our humidity, driven rain and occasional flooding make this one of the most frequent causes in Collier County.
How much does it cost to fix a garage door that will not close?
Sensor realignment with a full safety test typically runs $85–$150. A replacement photo-eye pair is usually $120–$260 installed. Repairing damaged sensor wiring runs $120–$280 depending on the run. An opener logic board is $180–$420, at which point we will compare it honestly against a new opener with battery backup.
How do I adjust the close limit on my garage door opener?
Most openers have a close-limit adjustment — a dial on the motor head on older units, or a programming sequence on newer ones; your manual will show which. Symptoms of a wrong close limit are a door that hits the floor and immediately reverses, or one that stops short leaving a gap. If adjusting it does not hold, the underlying problem is usually door balance rather than the setting.
Is it safe to leave my garage door open overnight?
It leaves your house unsecured and, in Naples, invites wildlife and weather as well. That is exactly why we run 24-hour service — a door stuck open is treated as urgent, not as a routine booking. If you cannot get anyone out, use the constant-pressure wall button to close it under supervision and get it repaired the next day.
Do you offer same-day service for a door that will not close?
Yes, and we are open 24 hours across Naples, Golden Gate, Golden Gate Estates, Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Immokalee and Ave Maria. We stock sensors, brackets, wiring and common logic boards on the truck, so most of these calls are resolved on the first visit.
