A garage door spring is the single hardest-working part on your house. It lifts 150 to 400 pounds of door, several times a day, for years, and it does it silently until the day it doesn't.

When it goes, it goes all at once. There is a bang, the door will not lift, and suddenly the car is stuck inside or the house is standing open.

We have been replacing springs in Collier County with 20+ years in the trade. We carry torsion springs, extension springs, cables and drums on the truck, which is why most spring jobs get finished on the first visit rather than turning into a two-day wait for parts.

A torsion spring pair in Naples runs $250 to $600 installed, with a flat written price before we touch anything and no trip charge.

🚨Spring just broke? Do not press the opener button again. Call (239) 832-1866 — answered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Read the next section first if you are standing in the garage right now.

Broken spring? We can usually be there today.

Tell us what you heard and what the door is doing — we can normally identify the spring size before we leave the shop.

How to tell a spring has broken

Three things to check, in order.

Most people know before they know. Here is what they describe when they call.

🔊The sound

A breaking torsion spring makes a single loud metallic bang, often compared to a gunshot or a car hitting the house. It happens most often in the early morning or late evening, when the steel is at its coldest point in the daily cycle and the door is either moving or sitting under full load.

If you were asleep when it happened, you find out the next morning.

👀The visual check

Walk into the garage, close the door, and look up.

  • Torsion springs sit on a steel shaft on the wall directly above the door opening. A broken one shows a clean two-to-three inch gap in the coil. The two halves will have unwound slightly and sit apart.
  • Extension springs run horizontally along the ceiling on either side, parallel to the tracks. A broken one hangs slack, or one side hangs visibly lower than the other.

⚙️The behaviour

  • The opener strains, hums, or lifts the door four to six inches and then stops
  • The door feels impossibly heavy by hand — not “heavy”, but immovable
  • The door goes up crooked, one side higher than the other
  • The opener runs its full cycle but the door does not move at all
  • The top section flexes or bends when the opener pulls

⚠️ Do not operate the door

Where a $400 repair turns into a $2,000 one.

This is the part we would ask you to take seriously, because it is where a $400 repair turns into a $2,000 one.

With a broken spring, do not press the opener button again. Not to test it. Not to see if it will go up “just this once.”

Here is why. The spring, not the opener, carries the weight of the door. A residential opener is rated to move a balanced door — it is designed to push maybe 15 to 20 pounds of imbalance, not 200. When you run an opener against a broken spring, one of four things happens:

  1. The opener gearbox strips. Plastic drive gears shear. That is a $100–$350 opener repair added to your spring bill, or a full replacement at $450–$900.
  2. The top door section bends. The opener arm pulls on one panel while the rest of the door refuses to move. A bent top section is a $250–$800 panel replacement, and on doors older than about ten years, matching panels may no longer be manufactured.
  3. The cables jump the drums. With no spring tension holding the drums, cables unwind, tangle and often kink. Add $150–$350.
  4. The door drops. This is the serious one. An unsprung door coming down is uncontrolled, fast, and heavy enough to break bones or crush a bonnet.

If your car is trapped inside, do not force it. Pull the emergency release rope and lift by hand only if two adults can manage it comfortably — and never let anyone stand under a raised, unsupported door.

If you are not confident, call us and leave it alone. We are open at 2am and there is no after-hours upcharge.

Torsion vs extension springs

Two systems doing the same job in very different ways.

🌀Torsion springs

Torsion springs mount on a shaft above the door opening and store energy by twisting. As the door comes down, cables wind onto drums at either end of the shaft, turning the shaft and winding the springs tighter. As the door goes up, the springs unwind and give that energy back.

This is what the great majority of Naples homes have, particularly anything built from the mid-1990s onward — which covers most of Golden Gate, North Naples, Lely, the Vineyards, Island Walk, Verona Walk, Ave Maria and Heritage Bay.

  • Better balance across the full travel of the door
  • Longer service life
  • Contained failure — a broken torsion spring stays on the shaft
  • Easier to tune precisely for a specific door weight

↔️Extension springs

Extension springs run horizontally above the tracks on both sides and store energy by stretching. They are the older system, common on Naples homes built in the 1970s and 1980s and on lightweight single-car doors.

They work. But they have a real failure mode: when an extension spring snaps under load, the pieces can fly. Any extension spring system should have safety containment cables — a steel cable run through the middle of each spring, anchored at both ends, so a break is caught rather than launched across the garage.

⚠️If you have extension springs with no containment cables, that is worth fixing regardless of whether anything is currently broken. It is an inexpensive add-on when we are already out.

🔄Which is right for a replacement?

If your door has extension springs and they are worn, you have a choice. On many older doors we can convert to a torsion system, provided there is adequate headroom above the opening. It costs more than a like-for-like extension replacement, but on a heavier door it is usually the better long-term answer.

We will tell you honestly which way we would go on your specific door, and we will quote both. Sometimes the honest answer is that a light, well-balanced extension setup is fine and there is no reason to spend the extra.

Why springs are always replaced in pairs

This question comes up on nearly every call, and it is a fair one. One spring broke. Why pay for two?

Because they are the same age and they have done the same work.

Torsion springs on a two-spring system share the load equally and cycle together, identically, from the day they are installed. When one reaches the end of its fatigue life, the other is within weeks or months of the same point. We see the second spring break within three to six months on a startling number of doors where a previous company replaced only one.

  1. You pay twice. A pair replaced together costs $250–$600. One spring now and one in four months costs you two service visits and two labour charges.
  2. The door runs unbalanced. A new spring and an old, fatigued spring have different rates. The door lifts unevenly, which grinds rollers, wears the tracks, and puts a twisting load on the opener.
  3. The warranty means less. We warranty repair labour for two years. We cannot stand behind a balance job where half the system is worn out.

If your door has a single torsion spring — common on lighter single-car doors — then obviously it is one spring. The pairing rule applies where there are two.

Cycle life: 10,000 vs 20,000+ cycles

The most useful thing on this page, and almost nobody explains it at the point of sale.

This is the most useful thing on this page, and almost nobody explains it at the point of sale.

Springs are rated in cycles. One cycle is one full open and one full close. The rating is a fatigue estimate, not a guarantee, but it is a genuinely good predictor.

Spring ratingRough lifespan at 4 cycles/dayTypical use case
10,000 cycles~7 yearsBuilder standard, light use
15,000 cycles~10 yearsMid-tier upgrade
20,000 cycles~13–14 yearsHeavy use, main-entry door
25,000–30,000 cycles~17–20 yearsLarge doors, families, humid coastal

Nearly every builder-installed door in Naples came with 10,000-cycle springs. They are the cheapest part that meets spec, and on a spec home, cheapest-that-meets-spec is the rule.

Here is the calculation that matters. Most Naples families use the garage door as the main entry to the house. Four cycles a day is conservative — school run, work, errands, back home. Six a day is not unusual. At six cycles a day, a 10,000-cycle spring is done in four and a half years.

🏝️Why high-cycle springs make particular sense here

Naples has an unusual usage profile because of seasonal residents. A seasonal home sits empty from roughly May through November. Those doors get almost no cycles for seven months — and then get very heavy use for five.

The practical problem is different though: a spring that breaks in July breaks in an empty house. Nobody hears the bang. The door either sits open for weeks or the house sits with a broken door until the owner flies back in October. We get a lot of calls in the first two weeks of November from people who have just landed.

For those homes we recommend 20,000-cycle or higher springs almost without exception. The upgrade over builder-grade is usually $60 to $150 on the pair and roughly doubles expected life. That is one of the few upsells in this trade that genuinely pays for itself, and it is the one we will actually push you on.

We stock both. We will quote both. If you want builder-grade because you are selling the house in eight months, say so and we will fit builder-grade without an argument.

Ask us to quote both grades

We will price builder-grade and high-cycle side by side and let you decide. No pressure either way.

What Naples air does to spring steel

Spring failure is fatigue failure. Corrosion accelerates fatigue by giving cracks somewhere to start.

🌊Salt air

Homes near the water take the worst of it. We see visibly rusted springs, cables and drums most consistently in Marco Island, Vanderbilt Beach, Park Shore, Royal Harbor, Aqualane Shores, Isles of Capri and Naples Park.

Salt-laden air gets into the garage every time the door opens. It settles on bare spring steel, and because a spring is under constant stress, surface pitting turns into a crack initiation site much faster than it would on an unstressed piece of steel.

Coated springs are worth it near the water. Black powder-coated or galvanised springs cost modestly more and hold up considerably better in salt. On a Marco Island or Royal Harbor door we recommend them as a matter of course.

🔥Heat cycling

A closed Naples garage in August routinely runs past 110°F. In January it can drop to the 50s overnight. Steel expands and contracts through all of it. Heat cycling does not destroy a spring on its own, but it works alongside fatigue and corrosion.

💧Humidity and standstill

This is where seasonal homes get caught out. A door that is not moving has springs, cables and rollers sitting in months of high humidity with no lubricant redistribution and no movement to shed surface moisture.

🏠If you are a seasonal owner, the single most useful thing you can do is ask whoever checks the house to run the garage door up and down two or three times a month and give the springs a light spray of proper garage door lubricant twice over the summer. It costs nothing and it makes a real difference.

Oversized and high-lift doors in Golden Gate Estates

Not every door in Collier County is a standard 16×7.

Golden Gate Estates is full of larger properties with detached workshops, RV bays, boat storage and taller garages. We regularly work on 18 and 20-foot wide doors, 8 to 14-foot tall doors, high-lift track systems, and vertical-lift doors in true shop buildings.

These are not standard spring jobs, and they should never be quoted from a price list over the phone without seeing the door. Here is what changes:

  • High-lift systems use different drums. A high-lift drum has a variable diameter so cable wraps stay in step as the door climbs. Fit standard drums to a high-lift setup and the cables unwind unevenly and eventually jump.
  • Oversized doors need calculated springs, not catalogue springs. We measure weight, height, drum size and shaft diameter, then calculate the required inside diameter, wire gauge and length. On a 20-foot RV door, guessing means a door that either floats up on its own or drops like a stone.
  • Bigger doors deserve higher cycle ratings. More mass means more stress per cycle. On an oversized door we default to 20,000 cycles or better.

Some of these springs are not on the truck, because no truck carries every size. When we have to order, we tell you that on the first visit along with a realistic turnaround, rather than promising same-day and then apologising.

→ How we handle Golden Gate Estates specifically

The real danger of DIY spring work

We are pro-DIY on most maintenance. This is the exception.

We are generally in favour of homeowners doing their own maintenance. Lubrication, tightening hinge bolts, replacing weather seal, testing the photo-eye safety reverse — all fair game, and we will happily talk you through any of it on the phone.

Spring replacement is the exception, and we say so plainly.

⚡What you are actually handling

A torsion spring on a standard double door holds roughly 200 to 400 foot-pounds of stored torque when fully wound. That energy does not dissipate because the door is down or the power is off. It sits there, indefinitely, waiting.

The spring is wound and unwound using winding bars — hardened steel rods sized precisely to the winding cone holes. Not screwdrivers. Not rebar. Not the handle of a socket wrench.

The two ways it goes wrong:

  1. The bar slips or the tool fails. A bar that is not a proper fit, or a cone whose set screws are not seated, releases the spring's energy through the bar. The bar becomes a projectile at head height.
  2. The door drops during the job. With the springs off and the door up, the only thing holding several hundred pounds is whatever you clamped to the track. Vice grips are not enough.

⚖️The other reason: balance

Even a DIY spring replacement that goes safely usually goes wrong quietly. Getting the right spring is a calculation involving door weight, drum diameter, cable drop and travel. Getting the right tension is a matter of quarter-turns.

A door a quarter turn under will drift down. A quarter turn over and it will fly up and slam at the top. Either way the opener works against the imbalance for years and dies early.

We calculate it, wind it, and then test it by hand: a properly balanced door lifted halfway should stay exactly where you left it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to replace a garage door spring in Naples?

A torsion pair runs $250 to $600 installed, depending on door weight and whether you go builder-grade or high-cycle. Single springs on light doors start around $180. There is no trip charge and the estimate is free — you get a flat written price before we start.

Can I still open my garage door with a broken spring?

Not with the opener — that is how a $400 job becomes a $2,000 one. You can pull the emergency release and lift by hand if two adults can manage it comfortably, but never stand under a raised, unsupported door. If it feels immovable, leave it and call us.

How long does a spring replacement take?

Most torsion pairs take 45 to 90 minutes on site, including balancing and the safety checks. Oversized and high-lift doors take longer, and occasionally need a part ordered.

Why do you replace both springs when only one broke?

Because they are the same age and have done identical work. The surviving spring is typically weeks to months from the same failure point. Replacing one leaves the door unbalanced, wears the opener, and usually means paying for a second call-out within the year.

How long should garage door springs last in Florida?

Builder-standard 10,000-cycle springs last roughly seven years at four cycles a day — and about four and a half years at six cycles a day, which is common on a main-entry garage. High-cycle 20,000 springs roughly double that. Salt air near the Gulf shortens all of it.

What are high-cycle springs and are they worth it?

They are springs rated for more open-close cycles before fatigue failure — typically 20,000 to 30,000 rather than 10,000. The upgrade is usually $60 to $150 on the pair and roughly doubles expected life. On a busy family door or a seasonal home, yes, clearly worth it.

Should I get coated springs near the water?

On Marco Island, Vanderbilt Beach, Park Shore, Royal Harbor, Aqualane Shores, Isles of Capri and Naples Park — yes, we recommend them as standard. Salt pitting on stressed steel is a crack initiation site, and coated springs cost modestly more.

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

We would strongly advise against it. A wound torsion spring holds 200 to 400 foot-pounds of stored energy that does not go away when the power is off, and it is released through hardened winding bars at head height. Beyond the safety issue, getting the spring size and tension right is a calculation, not a guess.

Do you carry springs for oversized and RV doors?

We carry a wide range, but no truck carries every size. Oversized and high-lift doors are measured and the springs calculated to the door. If we need to order, we tell you on the first visit with a realistic turnaround.

Do you charge extra for nights and weekends?

No. There is no after-hours upcharge. We answer 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and the price is the same at 2am as it is at 2pm.

What warranty comes with a spring replacement?

Two years on our labour, plus the full manufacturer warranty on the springs themselves. It is written on your invoice.

My door is crooked and one side is higher. Is that a spring?

Often it is a snapped cable rather than a spring, but the two frequently fail together. Either way, stop using the door — a crooked door is on its way out of the track, and an off-track door under load is the most dangerous state it can be in.

Springs and Cables Fail Together

When a torsion spring goes, the cables very often go with it — and a cable that has been carrying an out-of-balance door is already damaged even if it has not snapped yet. If your door is crooked in the opening or you can see slack cable beside the drum, read garage door cable repair in Naples.
