Read this first — the three-line version

  1. Do not press the opener button. The motor is not sized to lift an unsprung door and you will destroy the opener, the door, or both.
  2. Do not try to lift the door by hand. With a broken spring the door weighs its full 150–400 lb with nothing counterbalancing it.
  3. Do not touch the springs, cables or bottom brackets. Even a broken spring system holds lethal stored energy.

If your car is trapped inside and you genuinely need it out tonight, call us — we are open 24 hours across Naples, Golden Gate, Golden Gate Estates, Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Immokalee and Ave Maria. Locally owned, licensed LCC20260000672, 4.9 stars from 336 Google reviews.

How do I know it is actually the spring?

  • You heard a loud bang — people always describe it as a gunshot, a firecracker or something heavy falling. Often at night, because steel contracts as it cools and that is when a fatigued spring lets go.
  • There is a visible gap in the torsion spring above the door. A wound spring is a continuous coil; a broken one has a two-inch gap where it separated.
  • The opener runs but the door barely moves — it lifts a few inches, strains, and stops or reverses.
  • The door is extremely heavy by hand with the opener disconnected.
  • The top section is bending as the opener tries to lift the whole door by its top edge. Stop immediately if you see this — you are seconds away from a bent door.
  • The door slams down instead of settling gently.

How to Get Your Car Out Safely

Only if you must — and only with a second person

Honest answer first: the safest thing is to leave the door alone and wait for us. We are open 24 hours and this is exactly the call we take at 11pm. But if you genuinely must move a vehicle, here is the least-bad way.

  1. Make sure the door is fully closed. Never work under a partly open door with a broken spring.
  2. Pull the emergency release cord — the red handle hanging from the opener rail — to disconnect the trolley from the door.
  3. Get a second adult. One person cannot safely control an unsprung door of this weight. Lift together, from the bottom, with straight backs.
  4. Prop it immediately. As soon as the door is up, wedge locking pliers onto the track just under the bottom roller on both sides, or brace it with sturdy timber. Never rely on holding it.
  5. Move the vehicle, then lower the door slowly, together. Do not let it drop.
  6. Leave it closed and do not reconnect the opener.

If the door does not move easily with two people, stop. Something else has failed — often a cable that came off the drum or a door that is now binding in the track. Forcing it turns a spring repair into a spring, cable, track and section repair.

Never do these

  • Never wind or unwind a torsion spring without proper winding bars. Screwdrivers slip. This is how people lose fingers and take steel bars to the face.
  • Never remove a bottom bracket. They are under direct cable tension and release violently.
  • Never replace only one spring on a two-spring door. The second one is the same age with the same cycles and will fail within months, and an unbalanced pair damages the door.
  • Never keep pressing the opener button “to see if it catches.” Every attempt bends the top section further and cooks the motor.

Why Garage Door Springs Break

And why yours broke now

Cycle life — the real answer

A torsion spring is rated in cycles, not years. A standard residential spring is commonly rated around 10,000 cycles — one cycle being one open and one close. A Naples family using the garage as the main entrance runs six to ten cycles a day, which is 2,000–3,600 a year. That puts a standard spring at roughly three to seven years. High-cycle springs (16,000, 25,000, even 50,000) cost modestly more and last proportionally longer, which is what we fit on busy doors.

Corrosion — the Southwest Florida accelerator

Salt air on the coast and constant humidity everywhere attack the spring’s surface. Once the coating fails, the steel pits, and every pit is a stress riser on a component that fails by fatigue. A coastal spring can lose a large share of its rated life to corrosion alone. This is why we recommend galvanised or coated springs on Marco Island and the waterfront rather than standard black oil-tempered.

Temperature

Springs most often break at night or early morning, when cold contracts the steel and pushes an already-fatigued coil over the edge. Nothing you did caused it.

Wrong springs from the start

Springs must be matched to the door’s actual measured weight, height and drum size. Builder installations and cheap replacements are frequently sized off a chart rather than a scale. A mismatched spring is out of balance from day one and dies early — and it overloads the cables, rollers and opener while it does.

Neglect

An unlubricated spring grinds against itself coil to coil. Two minutes of proper garage-door lubricant twice a year genuinely extends spring life. Never WD-40 — it strips the lubricant you want. See garage door maintenance.

Why we always replace both springs

On a two-spring door, both have taken the same load for the same number of cycles in the same humidity. Replacing one leaves you with a new spring paired to one at the end of its life, an unbalanced door that stresses cables, rollers and opener, and a second call-out fee in a few months. Anyone offering to change “just the broken one” to win the job is selling you the next repair.

What a proper spring repair includes

  1. Weigh or accurately assess the door and size the springs to it — not to a chart.
  2. Replace both springs, correct wire size, inside diameter and length.
  3. Inspect and replace cables if corroded or frayed, and service the drums and end bearings.
  4. Wind to the correct turn count and set the door so it holds at waist height by hand.
  5. Re-set opener force and travel limits.
  6. Test both safety systems — photo-eye reverse and contact reverse.
  7. Lubricate the whole system and explain what failed and why.

Broken Garage Door Spring — Frequently Asked Questions

My garage door spring broke — can I still use the door?

No. Do not press the opener button and do not try to lift the door alone. With a broken spring nothing is counterbalancing the door, so the full 150–400 lb is on the opener or on you. Every attempt with the opener bends the top section further and can burn out the motor, turning a spring repair into a spring, section and opener repair.

How much does it cost to replace a broken garage door spring in Naples?

A pair of standard torsion springs typically runs $260–$520 installed. High-cycle springs run $340–$650 and coated or galvanised coastal springs $320–$600. Springs and cables together are commonly $350–$700 because the two usually fail around the same time. You get a firm price before any work starts.

Why do I have to replace both springs?

Because both have carried the same load for the same number of cycles in the same heat and humidity, so the surviving one is at the same point in its life. Pairing a new spring with an old one also leaves the door unbalanced, which overloads the cables, rollers and opener. Replacing one is a false economy and a second call-out within months.

How long do garage door springs last in Florida?

Springs are rated in cycles, not years — a standard residential spring is commonly rated around 10,000 cycles. A Naples family running six to ten cycles a day reaches that in roughly three to seven years, and coastal corrosion takes life off the top of that. High-cycle springs rated 16,000–25,000 cycles cost modestly more and last proportionally longer.

Why did my spring break at night?

Steel contracts as it cools, and that small extra stress is often what pushes an already-fatigued coil over the edge. It is why so many people are woken by what sounds like a gunshot in the garage. Nothing you did caused it — the spring simply reached the end of its cycle life.

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

We strongly advise against it. A torsion spring on a two-car door holds the equivalent of hundreds of pounds of force, and winding or unwinding it requires proper winding bars and technique. Screwdrivers slip. Serious injuries from DIY spring work — broken hands, facial injuries and worse — happen in Florida every year.

How do I get my car out if the spring broke?

The safest option is to wait for us; we are open 24 hours. If you must, close the door fully, pull the emergency release cord, and lift with a second adult — then immediately clamp locking pliers on the track under the bottom roller on both sides before anyone goes underneath. If the door does not move easily with two people, stop: something else has failed and forcing it will cause more damage.

How long does spring replacement take?

A standard residential spring replacement is usually 60–90 minutes on site, including sizing, winding, balancing, re-setting the opener and testing both safety systems. We carry the common spring sizes on the truck, so most Naples calls are completed on the first visit.

Do you offer 24-hour emergency spring repair?

Yes. We are open 24 hours across Collier County. A broken spring often means a car trapped inside or a house that cannot be secured, so we treat it as urgent rather than as a routine booking.

Should I replace the cables at the same time?

Very often, yes. Cables and springs are the same age and live in the same salt and humidity, and a door that has been running out of balance has been overloading the cables. If the cables show fraying, flattening or rust we replace them with the springs — it costs far less than a second visit.

Will a new spring fix a noisy door?

It will fix the metallic groan of a dry or failing spring, but most garage door noise comes from worn rollers, worn hinges and dry end bearings. We diagnose the whole system rather than assuming. See our roller replacement page.
