  1. Do not press the opener button. Every attempt drags the door further out of alignment, bends more track and can tear sections apart.
  2. Do not try to force the roller back in. The door is held by wound springs and tensioned cables; putting your hands into a partly derailed assembly is how people get hurt.
  3. Do not park under it, and do not walk under it. A door hanging on one side is not stable.

How to be sure it is off track

  • The door sits visibly crooked — one side higher than the other, or leaning into the opening.
  • You can see a roller sitting outside the track, or a gap between the door and the rail.
  • The door binds, grinds and stops partway.
  • The vertical track is visibly bent, kinked or splayed away from the wall.
  • The opener runs but the door does not follow it properly.

Five things that put a door off track

  1. A broken or unspooled cable. The most common cause by a wide margin. One cable lets go or jumps its drum, that corner drops, and the rollers on that side leave the rail. This is why a cable failure is never just a cable job. See cable repair.
  2. Impact. Backing into the door, or reversing while it is still opening. Usually bends track and damages a section at once. See panel replacement.
  3. Closing onto an obstruction. The door lands on a bin, a bike or a hose reel, the springs keep unwinding, the cable goes slack and jumps the drum.
  4. Worn rollers or broken hinges. A roller with a worn stem, or a sheared end hinge, lets a section wander out of the rail. See roller replacement.
  5. Loose or misaligned track. Years of vibration back the fasteners out, the track drifts, and the gap widens until a roller finds its way out.

What a proper off-track repair involves

  1. Secure and support the door so it cannot drop or shift while anyone is near it.
  2. Release stored energy safely with proper winding bars where springs have to be unwound.
  3. Find the actual cause — cable, drum, roller, hinge, track, obstruction or impact. Re-railing without fixing the cause guarantees a repeat.
  4. Straighten or replace the damaged track. Straightening is legitimate on a mild bend; a kinked or splayed section gets replaced, because a roller forced through a deformed rail will be noisy and will fail again.
  5. Re-seat the door and replace damaged rollers and hinges, and replace both cables if either was involved.
  6. Re-tension the drums and square the door so it sits level in the opening.
  7. Check spring balance — with the opener disconnected the door should hold at waist height.
  8. Re-set opener force and limits, test both safety systems, then lubricate.

Repair or replace?

Most off-track doors are repairable, and we would rather repair one than sell you a door you do not need. The honest exceptions:

  • Several sections creased or torn. Panel damage plus track damage often approaches half the price of a new insulated impact-rated door.
  • The door is old and unrated. If there is no product approval label and you were already thinking about replacing it, spending several hundred dollars is postponing the decision. See impact-rated doors.
  • The jamb or buck has failed. If the track tore out because the wood is rotten or termite damaged, the structure gets rebuilt regardless — and that is the moment to decide whether the door on top of it is worth it.

Preventing the next one

  • Keep the closing path clear — the single most common cause of an unspooled cable is a door closing onto something.
  • Replace rollers and hinges before they are visibly worn; both are cheap and both are what keep the door in the rail.
  • Check the balance annually. An out-of-balance door overloads the cables that hold it in place.
  • Keep the photo eyes clean and aligned so the door stops for obstructions. See sensor repair.
  • Book a tune-up — track alignment and fastener tightening are part of it.

Garage Door Off Track — Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put my garage door back on track myself?

We strongly advise against it. The door is held by wound torsion springs and tensioned cables, so a partly derailed assembly still contains a great deal of stored energy, and the bottom brackets are under direct cable tension. Levering a roller back into the rail also usually bends the track further. It is a genuine injury risk for what is often a $250 to $500 repair.

What causes a garage door to come off track?

Most often a lift cable that snapped or jumped its drum, dropping one corner. After that: impact from a vehicle, the door closing onto an obstruction, worn rollers or a sheared end hinge, and track that has drifted loose over years of vibration. The cause matters — re-railing without fixing it guarantees a repeat.

How much does it cost to fix a garage door that is off track?

A straightforward re-rail with no component damage is $150 to $300, but that is rare on its own. Off track with cable replacement — the most common combination — runs $250 to $500. Add track straightening or replacement and it is $250 to $650. Vehicle impact with a damaged section runs $600 to $1,600 or more. You get a firm price before work starts.

Is a door that is off track dangerous?

Yes. It is being held unevenly by a system designed to carry it at both corners at once, it can shift or drop without warning, and running the opener can bring it down. Do not park under it, do not walk under it and do not press the button. If a vehicle is trapped, call us — we are open 24 hours.

Can a bent garage door track be repaired or does it need replacing?

A mild bend can often be straightened properly. A kinked, creased or splayed section gets replaced, because a roller forced through a deformed rail will be noisy, will wear out fast and will derail again. We will tell you which one you have rather than defaulting to the more expensive answer.

How long does an off-track repair take?

A typical residential off-track repair with cables and rollers is one to two hours on site, including re-tensioning the drums, squaring the door, checking spring balance, re-setting the opener and testing both safety systems. We stock cables, rollers, hinges and common track on the truck, so most are a single visit.
