What actually counts as an emergency

A door stuck fully open is a security emergency, because the house is standing open to the street all night. A door stuck closed with the car inside is an emergency if you need the vehicle. A door hanging crooked, off one side of the track, or with a visible broken cable is an emergency for a different reason — it is holding a lot of stored energy in a way it was not designed to, and anyone walking under it is taking a risk. Everything else, including a noisy door or a remote that stopped working, is genuinely fine until morning and we will say so rather than sell you a night rate.

What to do before we arrive in Naples

Stop pressing the button. Every extra cycle on a door with a broken spring or a jumped cable bends track, tears hinges and burns openers. Unplug the opener so nobody in the house tries it again. Do not stand or park under a door that is not sitting square. If the door is open and cannot close, and you can do so safely from a stable ladder, a locking pliers clamped onto the track just above a roller on each side stops the door drifting — but do not attempt this on a door with a broken cable, which can move suddenly.

The manual release, and the one thing it does not do

The red cord disconnects the door from the opener trolley so you can move it by hand. On a door with a healthy spring, that works and you can lift it. On a door with a broken spring, pulling the cord does not make the door lighter — you are now holding 150 to 400 pounds of steel with nothing counterbalancing it, which is exactly how people get hurt. If the door will not lift easily by hand after the release, stop and leave it. There is nothing you can do at 2am that we cannot do faster and safer at 3am.
